TL;DR

Boxes (rolls) needed = ⌈(floor area × (1 + waste rate)) ÷ coverage per box⌉. One box of hardwood typically covers about 3.3 m².

Example) Floor 33 m² at a 5% waste rate: 33 × 1.05 = 34.65 m², 34.65 ÷ 3.3 = 10.5 → rounded up to 11 boxes.

m²
Total floor area to cover. 1 m² ≈ 10.76 sq ft.
m²
Hardwood box about 1.6-3.3; sheet roll varies by product.
%
Floors usually 5%, complex rooms 10%.

Results are a reference estimate based on the coverage per box you entered. Quantities vary with the room shape and board direction, so buy with extra.

How to use

  1. Enter floor area — Enter the floor area to be covered in square meters (m²). Add up width × length.
  2. Enter coverage per box and waste rate — Enter the area one box (or one roll of sheet flooring) covers and a waste rate (default 5%).
  3. View the result — Click calculate to see the area including waste, the number of boxes (rolls) needed, and the estimated material cost.

How to calculate flooring material

Flooring usage is found by taking the floor area, adding the waste rate for cutting loss, and dividing that area by the area one box (or one roll of sheet flooring) covers, then rounding up. Since you buy whole boxes and rolls even if you only use part of one, the result is always rounded up.

Sheet flooring is sold in rolls by width (often 1.8 m or 2 m) and is estimated using width and length together, but this calculator simplifies it to "coverage per unit." Area and waste rate concepts are covered in the guide to estimating interior material quantities.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the estimate different for sheet flooring vs. hardwood?

The basic principle is the same. Add the waste rate to the floor area, then divide by the area one unit covers (a roll for sheet flooring, a box for hardwood) and round up. Sheet flooring is sold in rolls by width (often 1.8 m or 2 m) and hardwood by the box, so just enter the coverage per unit that matches your product.

How much does one box of hardwood cover?

Engineered and laminate flooring varies by product, but one box usually covers about 1.6-3.3 m². It depends on the number and size of planks per box, so check the coverage per box on the spec sheet and enter it. This calculator defaults to 3.3 m².

What is the flooring waste rate?

Floors are simpler in shape than walls, so waste is lower, usually 5-10%. If the room is narrow and long or the pattern direction must be matched, raise it to about 10% to be safe. The default is 5%.

What if I know my floor area in square feet?

If you measure in square feet, convert with 1 m² ≈ 10.764 sq ft and enter the value in m². For example, 355 sq ft is about 33 m². The coverage per box is also shown in m², so use the same unit.

Can I order directly based on this result?

The result is a reference estimate. Real quantities vary with the room shape, board direction, thresholds, and built-in furniture, so buy by the box with extra and confirm the final quantity with your contractor.
