TL;DR

Rolls needed = ⌈(wall area × (1 + waste rate)) ÷ coverage per roll⌉. Coverage per roll is assumed to be about 16.5 m² for both paper-backed and vinyl wallpaper.

Example) For a 33 m² wall at a 10% waste rate: 33 × 1.1 = 36.3 m², 36.3 ÷ 16.5 = 2.2 → rounded up to 3 rolls.

Enter wall area

m²
Total of width × height for every wall. Include the ceiling area if papering the ceiling.
Coverage per roll is about 16.5 m² for both types.
%
Plain 5-10%, pattern matching 10-20%.

Results are a reference estimate based on typical specs. Wallpaper width and length vary by product, so confirm with the product spec and a contractor's quote before buying.

How to use

  1. Enter wall area — Enter the total wall area to be papered in square meters (m²). Add up width × height for each wall.
  2. Choose type and waste rate — Pick paper-backed or vinyl and enter a waste rate (default 10%) for pattern matching and cutting loss.
  3. View the result — Click calculate to see the coverage area including waste and the number of wallpaper rolls needed in a table.

How to calculate wallpaper quantity

Wallpaper usage is found by taking the wall area, adding the waste rate lost to cutting and pattern matching, and dividing that coverage area by the area one roll covers. Since you buy by the full roll even if you only use part of one, the result is always rounded up.

A vinyl roll is typically 106 cm wide and 15.6 m long, covering about 16.5 m² per roll. Paper-backed wallpaper comes in narrow (53 cm) and wide (93 cm) widths, so the number of rolls can vary by product.

If you measure in square feet, convert with 1 m² ≈ 10.764 sq ft. The overall principles of material estimation are explained in detail in the guide to estimating interior material quantities.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How much area does one roll of wallpaper cover?

This calculator assumes each roll covers about 16.5 m² for both paper-backed and vinyl wallpaper. A typical vinyl roll is about 106 cm wide and 15.6 m long and covers around 16.5 m², while paper-backed rolls are often narrower and may require more rolls, so adjust to your actual product spec.

What waste rate should I use?

For plain, non-patterned wallpaper use 5-10%; for patterned wallpaper that needs matching use 10-20%. The larger the pattern repeat, the more cutting loss, so use a higher waste rate to avoid running short. The default is 10%.

How do I find my wall area?

Add up width × height for every wall to get the total wall area. Subtracting large windows and doors is more accurate, but since wallpapering needs extra it is safer not to subtract small openings. If you are papering the ceiling, add the ceiling area too.

What is the difference between paper-backed and vinyl wallpaper?

Paper-backed wallpaper is cheaper and breathable but less stain-resistant. Vinyl (PVC-coated) wallpaper can be wiped clean and is durable but costs more. Because their width and length specs differ, the same area can require a different number of rolls.

Is this calculator's quantity accurate?

This calculator gives a reference estimate based on typical specs. Because each wallpaper product has a different width and roll length and usage varies by installation method, confirm with the product spec and a contractor's quote before buying.
